Overview

If you're programming an openair cinema in Bondi in 2024, there's only one way to open it: with The Pool, the new documentary about Bondi Icebergs. While this is only Sunset Cinema Bondi Beach's second year, it likes having fun with its program. This is the pop-up that had Jaws and Blue Crush on its debut lineup back in 2023, after all.

Between Thursday, November 14–Saturday, December 21, cinema will join sun, surf and sand as one of the best things to enjoy at Bondi when Sunset Cinema returns to Dolphin Court at Bondi Pavilion. There'll be bean bags to sit on. There'll be a bar serving boozy beverages, food trucks dishing up bites and popcorn as a snack option. And there'll be movies under the stars, of course.

The roster of flicks spans a mix of new, recent and classic titles playing Tuesday–Sunday weekly. On the list: Smile 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Gladiator II, Saturday Night and Wicked among 2024 releases; the retro likes of The Princess Diaries, Lords of Dogtown, the OG Freaky Friday, Finding Nemo, 500 Days of Summer, Dirty Dancing and Shrek; and Christmas viewing via Elf, The Holiday, Love Actually and Home Alone.

Sunset Cinema is no stranger to Sydney, including in St Ives and also North Sydney — and it's also returning to the latter across Thursday, December 5, 2024–Saturday, March 15, 2025.

At all sites, BYO picnics are encouraged; however, the event is fully licensed, which means alcohol can only be purchased onsite. And if you don't pack enough snacks, that's where the hot food options, plus plenty of the requisite movie treats like chips, chocolates, lollies and popcorn, come in.
