Overview

You might not be jetting off on a Mexican adventure anytime soon, but Sydney's new Cinco de Mayo street fiesta promises the next best thing. Marking Mexico's famed holiday weekend with a gutsy serve of food, colour and music, the inaugural Tacos 'n' Tequila festival will take over Dawes Point Park on May 4 and 5.

And it's not doing things by halves. The fest has pulled together a lineup of Sydney's best-loved and most authentic Mexican spots, for an all-round flavour-packed food offering showcasing a huge variety of regional fare. Each will be slinging a selection of tried-and-true menu favourites, alongside an exclusive festival dish, at the park under the Harbour Bridge.

Get extra excited for Al Pastor tacos and tamales from Rosa Cienfuegos' Mexican deli in Dulwich Hill and plant-based bites courtesy of all-vegan Surry Hills haunt Bad Hombres. There'll also be Central American-leaning eats by Panama House, a range of Chula's go-to Mexican fare, and even a Mexican-inspired dessert from the masters at Messina.

In between all the food appreciation, there'll be plenty happening, including tequila masterclasses, a mariachi band, Lucha Libre wrestling, taco eating competitions and live street art installations by Skullavera.

The event will run from 12–9pm on the Saturday and 12–7pm on the Sunday. Entry is free, though you'll need to register for a spot to be one of the 2500 through the gates each day.
