The Great Fire - Belvoir

Moving to the country ain't all it's cracked up to be.

Overview

Many an idealistic couple has moved to the country to start a family, in pursuit of peace, quiet, forever love and self-sufficiency. Many an idealistic couple has, years later, watched their family (and maybe even themselves) drift away from their hopes - geographically, emotionally and morally. In The Great Fire, clever young playwright Kit Brookman takes a head-on look at this familiar story.

At the play's centre are Judith and Patrick, who fled to the Adelaide Hills in the 1970s, where they built their own home and raised their children. As decades passed, the foundations on which they based their life crumbled away, ever so slowly. Now, their daughter is expecting their first grandchild, and, on a scorching hot Christmas day, returns home, along with the rest of the family. Will they ever be able to restore their old life and realise their original dream?
