Anyone who considers themselves a Sydneysider knows the The Sun-Herald City2Surf. That's understandable — it's the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting over 85,000 participants from elite athletes to fun-run-loving locals each year. Accordingly, the charity fundraiser — and epic test of stamina and virtue — is hard to miss even on the laziest of radars.

Wholly owned and organised by The Sun-Herald since its humble beginnings 50 years ago, this ain't a casual saunter through the park. As the name suggests, this is 14 kilometres of walking, jogging and hardcore PB-busting running, usually as partakers make their way from the CBD to the sands of Bondi via the winding roads and hills of the eastern suburbs. In 2020, however, there'll be a big change — while the race is going ahead, it's doing so in a different way.

This year's event has been dubbed The Sun-Herald City2Surf Virtual Run, but 'virtual' doesn't mean staying at home, staying inside and simply watching on. Rather, on Sunday, October 18, you can pound the pavement — either by running, jogging or walking — in your own neighbourhood, no matter where in Sydney you live.

You can dress up, too, and cover the 14 kilometres with your mates — while social distancing, of course.

Entries open at 10am on Thursday, August 13 — and, organisers are hopeful that you might be able to make the usual run with other contenders, too, albeit on a smaller scale than usual. If that ends up being possible, anyone who has registered for the Virtual Run will get priority access to upgrade their entry.

The Sun-Herald City2Surf Virtual Run will take place on Sunday, October 18, with entries open from 10am on Thursday, August 13.
