Arizona Awaits
Arizona is a destination rich with experiences, and a hell of a lot more than red rocks and cacti.
The Grand Canyon State is even grander than you can imagine. From the huge metropolis of Phoenix to the sun-baked scenery of the Sonoran desert and the alpine village of Flagstaff. We took a deep dive into the state in partnership with the Arizona Office of Tourism, and have curated guides to everything you can find in the 48th state.
These guides will help you plan your next road tripping journey through the USA. Hit the road and drive to all the must-see sites in a short adventure, follow (and be informed by) the experience of a Concrete Playground writer’s own first time touring the state, dive deep into the diverse and delightful food scene, unwind in a luxurious resort, or get your hands dirty on a rugged outdoor adventure. Each itinerary we’ve designed has done the leg work to save you time in finding the stops best suited to you.
Keep an eye out in each guide for unique experiences you can add to your trip, all bookable through Concrete Playground Trips, informed by local knowledge and our own time in Arizona. It’s time to go grand: Arizona Awaits.
WHEN TO GO
Most of Arizona is pretty warm year-round, but it can be particularly hot in summer (June to September). Southern Arizona tends to be lighter on tourists in the warmer months if you prefer to avoid a crowd. If you visit in December to March you’ll experience snowy scenery around Flagstaff and the alpine regions where snow sports are popular throughout the winter.
GETTING THERE
There aren’t direct flights to Arizona from Australia yet but there are still plenty of options. Flights depart from all eastern capital cities, routing through Los Angeles, San Francisco or Dallas and arriving either in Phoenix or Tucson. Phoenix is a great central starting point within the state, or alternatively you can work your way up by arriving in Tucson near the Mexican border.
SPENDING MONEY
Considering the length of the journey, you’ll need to set aside funds for your flights. But once you’ve arrived in Arizona you can be as budget-conscious or go as big-time as you’d like. All cities have an excellent mix of dining, experiences and accommodation to choose from that cater to different budgets. Just remember to consider the exchange rate!
DON’T MISS
Arizona has such a range of experiences to discover. Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the United States, making it great for urban experiences. Tucson in the south is the first US UNESCO city of gastronomy so is a fantastic foodie destination. And further to the north, Flagstaff is surrounded by spectacular natural beauty — including the iconic Grand Canyon.
