Overview

What exactly does 'Australian life' look like? It's a pretty broad term, we know. And after a tumultuous 18 months or so, any picture of our everyday existence is sure to look a little different. Now, you can catch a glimpse into the diverse lives of other Aussies at Australian Life, a high-profile photography competition that's one of the highlights of City of Sydney's Art and About.

This year, a panel of photographers, artists and curators narrowed down hundreds of competition entries to 28 finalists, who represent a combination of amateur and professional photographers. Usually, the winning works — which all encapsulate the essence of Australian life — would be on display at a free outdoor exhibition. But, for rather obvious reasons, the exhibition has shifted online, meaning you can now view the stunning photographs on the City of Sydney website. All have a shot at winning the overall prize of $10,000, which will be announced on Thursday, September 16.

So, cast your eye over pics of majestic beachscapes, local footy games, babies chilling in eskies on hot summer days, bright outback scenes and haunting depictions of burnt land, and escape your own four walls — even if temporarily. You can do a deep dive into the stories behind the images, too, with a series of free online talks with the photographers taking place between September 16 and October 7.

And for the first time in the competition's near two decade history, this year you can vote for your favourite work in the People's Choice Award, with the winner of that prize taking home a $5000 Olympus photography pack. Just make sure to vote before Wednesday, September 15.
