From the same minds behind Portal and Folonomo comes yet another 'eat good, feel good' social enterprise eatery — this time in North Sydney. Like its siblings, Symbol is not-for-profit hospitality venture, where 100 percent of the profits at Symbol are split between a variety of worthy causes, as chosen by the customer. Your coffee money spent here could go towards helping Eat Up feed school lunches to needy Aussie kids, or maybe even rescuing children from human trafficking as part of Blue Dragon's international work. It's environmentally conscious, too, operating entirely plastic-free.
On the menu, you'll find big love for bold flavours and seasonal produce grown by local Aussie farmers. Bright, lively brunch fare might include the likes of avo with tahini dressing and feta ($8), chilled sago pudding with coconut cream ($4.50), or a vibrant acai bowl ($14). Lunchtime means goodies like barbecue pulled pork rolls ($12), fresh salads (from $9.50) and a daily-changing quesadilla ($9–13 with salad), while the specialty coffee rotation showcases organic and fair trade finds sourced from around the world.
The Berry Street space has been designed by award-winning Sydney architects WMK, and has a multitude of functions. You'll find artwork curated by in-house studio Project 504, an auditorium for holding events and workshops, and a yoga area which hosts free monthly classes.
