Tom-Yum Tum-Gang
Glebe Point Road's legendary takeaway Thai joint.
Overview
Every Sydneysider thinks their local Thai restaurant is the best, but Glebe residents may just have the edge thanks to Tom-Yum Tum-Gang. Well, depending on what you're looking for. If it's an excellent atmosphere or boundary-pushing dishes you're craving, we suggest going elsewhere.
But for familiar Thai-style dishes, huge portions and wallet-friendly prices, Tom-Yum Tum-Gang is your spot. And when we say wallet-friendly, we really mean it. We're talking lunch specials and cheap mains at dinner.
Tom-Yum Tum-Gang has been open for just over a decade and in that time it's amassed a loyal customer base, including CP readers @shannahooper and @tigray. Crowds flock here for all the classics — think massaman beef curry (the restaurant's signature dish), pad thai and prawn laksa. The chicken wings are a must-order dish, too.
Vegetarians can enjoy an entree of curry puffs and deep fried tofu while ordering a tom yum hed soup with mushrooms, lemongrass, lime juice, herbs, tofu, coriander and spring onions is a delicious option for a main. Alternatively, a Thai salad with mixed vegetables, tofu, cashew huts and herbs is a fresh and light option.
For the carnivores among us, the red curry with a choice of chicken, beef, pork, prawns, seafood or duck is a medium hot option in coconut milk while the oyster sauce stir-fry with fresh vegetables is a classic.
There is also the chance to order a traditional Thai style country barbecue chicken with a fresh salad or the Crying Tiger BBQ, a beef option with a special spicy sauce. Tom-Yum Tum-Gang is a truly superb local neighbourhood Thai restaurant that rises above most others like it.
