The Ten Best Milkshakes in Wellington

Slurp down alcoholic milk concoctions, insane freak shakes and baklava in liquid form.

Let's throw it right back to one of the undisputed classic kings of summer treats: milkshakes. Whether you're a die-hard fan of The Longest Shake in Town, or prefer something a little more refined, there's no arguing that milkshakes are an unrivalled sweet refresher during the hot summer months. Thankfully, Wellington offers a milktastic variety of shakes. Get ready to slurp, you're in for a treat.

CARRELLO DEL GELATO

You've just spent a long, lazy day soaking up the sun on the golden sands of Oriental Bay. What better way to refresh yourself than a palate-pleasing gelato shake from the one and only Carrello? Choose any two of their award-winning gelato flavours and watch them get blended into a milky frenzy. I chose a passionfruit and feijoa shake to cool off, but if you have an insatiable sweet tooth, why don't you try a mix of chocolate and rocky road? Go on, you deserve it.

SHAKE

Excitement, awe, wonder. These were just three of the emotions I experienced at Shake. Renowned for its absolutely insane freak shakes, these all-natural shakes are edible, artistic sculptures in a glass. A creative outlet for Aston, the master craftsman behind these out-of-this-world concoctions, you'll be asking yourself "How do I eat this?" or even wondering if you want to destroy such a masterpiece. Aesthetics aside, these shakes are to die for — rich natural flavours, and a lot of love mean you can't go wrong at Shake. They have regular flavour shakes available too, but there is always a brand new freak shake available every month — this month it's the Señor Guy Fawke. You won't be disappointed.

BURGER LIQUOR

Burgers and milkshakes go together like bread and butter, so it's no surprise that Burger Liquor has the shakes to match its legendary patties. On offer are a deliciously naughty selection of alcoholic milkshakes. Yep, that's right, adult only milkshakes. I was feeling fruity so I had the Strawberry Dream: white chocolate, vodka and strawberry nectar. This was a creamy delight that wasn't overpowered by the vodka and the tang of strawberry gave it a balanced zing. Enjoy a childhood treat with perfect amount of adult.

FIVE BOROUGHS

Five Boroughs is one of Wellington's favourite establishments, known for serving up some mean New York deli-inspired eats. But it's not just New York that serves as inspiration, drawing from the Lebanese heritage of the owners, they present the Bam Bam Baklava milkshake. This shake is a seriously sweet mixture of honey, pistachios, milk, and rose water blitzed into baklava goodness. Make sure you give it a good mix up before sipping away, this shake is baklava in liquid form.

SWEET MOTHER'S KITCHEN

Another iconic fixture on Wellington's culinary bucket-list, Sweet Mother's is here to serve you up some devilishly delectable comfort food — milkshakes included. I opted for the peanut butter milkshake. Sweet and salty, this shake is the perfect treat to treat yo' self with. Served right of the container used to make the shake, there's always delicious un-blitzed morsels of peanut butter that create a luxuriously, rich texture.

MIDNIGHT ESPRESSO

Cuba Street's ultimate guilty pleasure, Midnight Espresso has everything you could ever want: cakes, slices, burgers and of course, milkshakes. With lots of sweet options available, I chose a cookies and cream shake that was absolutely moreish. If crumbly morsels of cookie soaked in sweet, milky goodness isn't heaven on earth, then I don't know what is.

FIDEL'S

What kind of list would this be without the notoriously delicious, half-a-tub-of-ice-cream laden, Snickers milkshake from Fidel's? Wanna order food with your shake? Forget about it. There's no way you're getting in a single bite after polishing off this Snickers shake. This liquid Snickers sensation will certainly bring all of the boys to the yard.

SJUICE

I feel compelled to include something that won't use up your weekly recommended sugar intake in a day, but is still insanely good. Enjoy a guilt-free shake from SJuice located in the Capital Market on Willis Street. Great for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up if you're in the office all day. Choose from a selection of fruits, veges, milks, and even supplement shots. I had a mango, banana and honey shake and felt that my mind, body, and soul were totally rejuvenated.

BUTLERS CHOCOLATE CAFÉ

Death by chocolate — but in the best way possible. Walking into Butlers, I was immersed in decadence. The rows of chocolates in the glass cases, the wafting aroma of freshly made coffee — perfection. I recommend the praline milkshake, which was made even sweeter with a free chocolate (you get one with every drink purchased). Imagine praline chunks soaked in chocolatey milkshake goodness, topped off with a swirl of whipped cream and gooey chocolate sauce. You're welcome.

SIX BARREL SODA CO.

Yes, Six Barrel Soda Co. has some of the best fizzy around, but you're shooting yourself in the foot if you overlook the milkshakes. With a light and refreshing selection available, I chose a hibiscus milkshake. Sweet, and a little bit unusual, enjoy a taste of the tropics as you sip away your lazy summer day.
