Overview

Constantly humming with life, energy and colour, Africa is one of the liveliest places on earth. Thankfully you don't have to fork out on spendy flights to immerse yourself in the culture — just head along to the African Market in Newtown at the end of January.

This will be the third African Market to be held in Wellington, and if you've never been to one before, now's a good time to start. Take your time browsing through the unique, authentic gifts on display — will you head home with dashikis (African garments) for the whole family, jewellery for your significant other or something a little quirky for yourself?

You'll have plenty of opportunities to get hands-on too. There will be arts and craft stalls, as well as face painting and hair braiding if you really want to head home with a fresh new look.

Don't forget to keep yourself fed with the baked goodies on sale, and if you're in need of a pick-me-up towards the end of the day, make sure you sample some traditional African coffee.

These markets are all about helping African communities integrate in New Zealand. So go on, support your new neighbours and score some treats for yourself while you're at it.
