Sister Corita's Summer of Love

An artistic meeting of religion and pop culture.
Madeline Chatterley
September 13, 2016

Overview

Pop culture inspired a passion for art for Sister Corita; a Roman Catholic nun from Los Angeles. Showing in the City Gallery, Sister Corita's art is derived from the pop culture that was exploding onto the scene in the 1980s. The screen prints represent a warped image of anything that influenced the youth at the time; from memorable lyrics to food brands.

With bold words and bright colours the gallery is lit up with Sister Corita's attempt to adapt the Catholic church to the modern world. The exhibition, alongside more traditional art currently showing, is embellished with documentaries and complimenting works. The collection of screen prints takes over a whole floor of the gallery and injects life into the relationship between religion and visual art.
