Overview
Now in its ninth year, the O'Neill Aotearoa Surf Film Festival celebrates the best of surf culture and our connection with the environment through a curated selection of international surf features, documentaries and short films.
This year's ASFF kicks off in Gisborne on Wednesday, March 10 before dropping in to seaside towns up and down the country. The film festival will host two sessions in Wellington at Breaker Bay Community Hall on Wednesday, March 31.
The official film selection for 2021 includes three features and a selection of films from the ASFF short film competition. From director Andy Deer comes Made In Aotearoa, a journey following up-and-coming Kiwi surfer and Red Bull athlete Kehu Butler. Enfer & Paradis goes behind the scenes of the first mixed surfing world championships in a small Portuguese fishing village, while Riss follows legendary surfer Carissa Moore around the 2019 World Surf League Championship Tour season as she faces all the ups and downs head-on.
The selection of short films will precede each session. Attendees can expect a curated selection of shorts spanning Indonesia, Spain, New Zealand and Australia. A licensed bar will be available in the cinema for the main festival.
