Overview

From September 13-16, the German Film Festival will be playing ten movies at Academy Cinemas for free. That's right: kostenlos.

Thanks to the very generous sponsors of the festival you can now see the critically acclaimed German language films such as The Last Pig — a film that follows a farmer who loses all his pigs to a meteorite, except one. Instead of wallowing in the mud, the unlikely pair become vagabonds and travel the country.

Based on a best-selling novel, Goodbye Berlin depicts two young boys who have 'borrowed' a car and journey through provincial East Germany. Filled with beautiful scenery, car chases and laughs, this coming of age film will leave you feeling uplifted and wanting to take your own summer roadie.

Those looking for a sure-fire classic should see Maria Schrader's Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe. In the 1920s and '30s, Austrian-Hungarian author Stefan Zweig was considered one of the most popular writers in the world. This film follows Zweig's exile from his Nazi-occupied homeland as he travels Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and New York. Considering the turbulent time Europe is once again experiencing, this film and Zweig's relevance today is palpable — he stated, "Anger makes one not only malign but sharp-sighted."

As tickets are first come first served and with most of the films only playing once, be sure to check the German Film Festival guide and get down to the Academy fast.
