Hikashu

Kaleidoscopic since the seventies, this one's going to be an experience.

Overview

Led by spontaneity and improvisation, at the heart of a kaleidoscopic whirlwind of timbral and stylistic blending, Hikashu are coming to Meow. The five-piece Japanese group first hit the scene in the 70s, when a number of Japanese bands were creating a futuristic new sound. Where bands like Yellow Magic Orchestra looked to the sweeping numbers of bands like Kraftwerk, Hikashu jumped into the psychedelic greats to lead their sound.

Led by renowned, extreme vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Makigami Koichi, Hikashu are highly experimental and led by a "self-sufficiency" approach, ill at ease with the restrictions of popular music. Their name holds absolutely no conventional meaning in Japanese: fitting for this avant-pop ensemble.

Hikashu will be accompanied in Wellington by futurefunk/psych heroes Orchestra of Spheres.
