Martino Gamper: 100 Chairs in 100 Days

The best burger. The best yoga class. The best barista. The internet sometimes feels like a catalogue of 'best of' lists. Creating 100 chairs in 100 days Martino Gamper sought to challenge the idea that any one of these chairs could be judged the 'best'.

Gamper takes salvaged elements of other chairs and puts them together in ways both poetic and strange, to create one-off chairs with stories of their past lives to tell. Designer furniture is so frequently emulated in cheap knockoffs but you're unlikely to see any one of Gamper's 100 chairs mass-produced (unlike his highly marketable Arnold Circus Stool).

The 100th chair for this exhibition was made by the artist in Wellington during the installation of the show (neighbouring Nikau Café might want to do a chair inventory).
