Overview
This month welcomes No Meat May, a call to action which encourages carnivores to ditch meat and animal products and reap the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. Now in its sixth year, the initiative has the ultimate goal of improving personal health, ending factory farming and saving the planet. Organisers say that, on average, participants save at least 31 animals, avoid seven kilograms of meat consumption and prevent around 108 kilograms of CO2 from being pumped into the atmosphere.
Doing its bit for Mother Earth, burger joint Wendy's has jumped on the campaign, and for the rest of the month will be offering a new meat-free burger.
Worthy of converting even the most staunch of meat eaters, the Smoky Shroom burger ($6.90) features crispy onion rings, mushroom sauce 'misted' with wood smoke, smoky mushroom aioli and colby cheese, all sandwiched between a toasted kaiser bun.
For those who just can't chop out the sweet smack of meat entirely, the Smoky Shroom can also be enhanced with manuka-smoked streaky bacon and a choice of beef, double beef or double chicken. It's available for a limited time from Friday, May 18.
