The output of Brooklyn-based duo Ratatat has been described as many things. On the grounds of the unlikely combination of synchronised guitar riffs, classical arrangements and an underlying nest of synthesisers and beats, the most apt description is probably something along the lines of ‘rocktronica’. It’s music for a boyfriend trying not to offend his girlfriend’s parents at dinner, while still staying true to his long-haired psychedelic roots.
The duo, made up of school friends Mike Stroud and Evan Mast, began making music together in 2001, recording under the name Cherry. After making the transition to Ratatat, they penned a deal with XL Recordings and released their breakthrough self-titled debut. Four albums later, the pair’s best known work is the single ‘Loud Pipes’; particularly popular on this side of the world thanks to a rework by New Zealand rapper David Dallas.
In celebration of releasing their fifth album Magnifique this year, Ratatat will play two shows in New Zealand. Their live performances have been compared to that of ‘60s psychedelic rock bands, due to energetic light shows, hypnotic projections and technicolour animations.
