Overview
Christopher comes from a very large Samoan family. He was born in Porirua, raised in Nelson and now lives in Wellington, but his latest exhibition at play_station draws on his Pacific heritage. The Romantic Picturesque is a partnership of performance and video works inspired by early 1900s postcards of island life.
Christopher holds his Master of Fine Arts from Massey University, where he explored what it meant to be a singular identity — something that contrasted his childhood, experiencing life as aiga.
The exhibition mixes the seemingly plausible with the strikingly absurd to explore themes of love, nature and poetry through collaborations with other artists, performers and musicians. The works use a multimedia element as they attempt to ask 'who are you?' and 'what is your world view?' As an extension of the artist-run 2017 Hobiennale, Christopher's works will be housed in play_station space for the first part of February.
Join Christopher for an artist talk and screening on Thursday 15 February from 5pm.
