Overview

From dragon boys to bamboo princesses, Japan's animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli is responsible for some of the most charmingly weird and wonderful animated film of the last 25 years. Celebrating the work of the anime masters who founded the studio in 1985, The Tale of Studio Ghibli Showcase: Celebrating the Genius of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata brings four of their films and two feature length documentaries to The Embassy in November.

The features are Takahata’s The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and Grave of the Fireflies, and Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises and My Neighbour Totoro - a film each from either end of the animators' Ghibli careers. The documentaries, The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness and Isao Takahata and His Tale of the Princess Kaguya, slide back the shoji panel on the creative lives of two of Japan's foremost filmmakers.

Miyazaki announced his retirement in 2013 (seriously this time), in order to focus on the legendary Studio Ghibli Museum in Tokyo. The production of Studio Ghibli films has been temporarily halted following Miyazaki's retirement.
