Overview
On the first Thursday of every month, the City Gallery is Tuatara Open Late. The event profiles exhibitions showing in the gallery, pairing them with corresponding events with friends of the gallery, experts in their fields, arts commentators, musicians and performance artists. There's no telling what's coming up from the gallery team.
The next Open Late will align with the gallery's current exhibition Occulture, celebrating the 100-year anniversary of Rosaleen Norton's birth with a night of witches.
Born 'during a thunderstorm' in Dunedin in 1917, Norton moved to Sydney, where she became known as 'the Witch of Kings Cross' and was persecuted for her transgressive behaviour and for her mystical art works summoning pagan entities.
Cynthia Crosse of religious organisation Ordo Templi Orientis will discuss Norton, while teacher of magic Pam Grossman calls in to give her two cents from New York.
Rounding off the night there will be performances from pagan folk-metal trio Hex and reverb-washed post-punk group Mermaidens, supper treats from House of Dumplings and a cash bar serving Tuatara beer, Seresin and Six Barrel Soda Co.
