Overview
City Gallery's popular late-night program of art, music, beer and talks is getting jazzed up on Thursday 7 June. In partnership with the Wellington Jazz Festival, this edition of Tuatara Open Late features live performances by two of New Zealand's favourite jazz artists.
Tour the exhibition This is New Zealand, which explores the role art has played in national identity, and hear Nigel Patterson (The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties) tickle the ivories on Michael Parekōwhai's extraordinarily carved piano sculpture.
Refuel at the gallery bar with a Tuatara beer or a Seresin Estate wine and listen to City Gallery Book Club host Emily Perkins discuss politics, poetry and plans for the future (featuring Nicky Hager).
Later, be serenaded by soul superstar Bella Kalolo, who will perform alongside a full live band. The Wellington-based Samoan, Tongan and Māori artist has made waves at home and abroad, lending her vocals to projects with Mos Def, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, soul legend Chaka Khan and many more. Bella Kalolo's live performances are powerful, dynamic and captivating, making for an unforgettable evening.
Tuatara Open Late is a regular program of after-dark art and music at the City Gallery on the first Thursday of every month.
