Tuesday Talks: Exploring the Dwarf Planets Pluto and Ceres
Despite being shunned and demoted from planet status, Pluto's popularity is currently going through a revival. Ceres is pretty cool too.
Overview
In the wake of being reclassified from planet to dwarf planet, some might say Pluto has been going through a rough patch in recent years. But in the last week that’s all changed. With the the fly by of NASA’s New Horizons probe, humankind has just got a stunning look at our tiny neighbour. And now, despite being over 4.4 billion kilometers from the sun, Pluto is hotter than ever.
You can catch more of the Pluto buzz at Space Place this Tuesday. Edwin Rod from the Wellington Astronomical Society is presenting the latest discoveries about Pluto and Ceres, another dwarf planet orbiting in the asteroid belt. General admission applies, find out more here.
