Whanau Drop-in — Finale: Bouquet

Overview

More than 200,000 pieces of recycled plastic confetti make up Nike Savvas' Finale: Bouquet. The sensory kinetic exhibition from the Australian-born artist is the latest permanent edition to Te Papa's Toi Art, where it will be on display until January 12, 2020.

To wrap up the exhibition, Te Papa is hosting a series of free activities inspired by the artwork. Visitors on Friday, 10 January will have the opportunity to learn about two and three-dimensional art, and make their own dimension-bending artworks. Drop in with the whānau to take part in activities inspired the jaw-dropping artwork Finale: Bouquet, which the artist Nike Savvas describes as "a three-dimensional painting".

Learn about different ways artists create dimension by exploring the artworks on display in Toi Art. Then find your favourite two-dimensional artwork – it could be a painting, drawing, or print. Te Papa challenges you to reimagine it in three dimensions and create your own artwork to take home.

It took six installers precisely 816 hours to arrange the colourful strands of Finale: Bouquet as if they had been caught mid explosion. The end result sits eight metres high and over 18 metres long. The seven-colour palette — from mountain lily to kōwhai, mānuka and sun orchid — was inspired by multiple sources, including botanical prints of native New Zealand flora by Sarah Featon (1848–1927).

The site-specific commission is found in Threshold Gallery on Level 4. Exhibition entry is free.
