Overview
With a seasonal menu, daily baked items from in-house ACME Bread and Bakery, coffee roasted on site, and a wine list, Prefab is so perfect it’s almost painful. For those with an eye for interiors, Prefab nails industrial chic. You can even buy the same Robot chairs ($350), bar stools ($450), and stools ($367) - if you’re that way inclined. Or perhaps the thick drill cotton aprons ($75) made in New Zealand and worn by wait staff are more your thing. Oh, yeah, you can buy those too. It’s hard not to want to take a piece of Prefab home with you. The concrete floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and wooden furniture are pretty damned desirable. Apparently they’ve thought of everything – knives and forks are encased in branded cardboard pockets, and even the serviettes – thick, soft, and white – are worth mentioning.
And I haven’t even got to the food yet. Prefab serves breakfast until 11.30am, with most of your usual breakfast favourites. Potato gratin with bratwurst, poached egg & hot mustard mayo ($20) is hard to go past. The coffee is strong and hot, and they offer bottomless filter coffee ($3.50) to get your day started the right way.
Seasonal salads are so amazing I hesitate to call them a salad. These are no sad mixed bag of lettuce deals, but rather a delicious combination of seasonal produce to create an actually filling meal without the guilt factor. ACME salad ($18) with salmon ($23) or haloumi ($25) is definitely worth your time.
They’re also licensed for beer and wine. The outdoor area is sun-drenched on most days – thankfully, sombreros are available for use. Don’t be put off by the perfect looking patrons – it’ll rub off on you too. The service at times can be a little brisk, but hey, if that’s what it takes to run this ship, then yes, captain.
