Overview

One of my all-time favourite pastimes is to find somewhere to sit, seemingly hidden from the world, with a good cup of coffee and simply watch the people that pass by. Wellington, with its broad diversity of inhabitants, offers many spots in which to do exactly this. And Squirrel is the new arrival to the party.

At the front of the cafe is one large window, allowing natural light to filter in and warm the space and offering a perfect spot to watch the people of the city pass you by. As I walked in, the first thing I noticed was how effortlessly the concrete floor integrated with natural wooden floorboards. Teamed with clean white walls, simple furnishings and brightly coloured flowers on each table, Squirrel offers the perfect spot to escape the rush of the CBD.

I arrived just after lunch time, and it was packed to the brim. People of all ages were laughing and chatting up a storm, the coffee machine raging furiously in the background. After a short wait in the queue to the counter, I ordered a flat white and glanced over at the offerings on the far right side beneath the glass. Chocolate caramel slices, peppermint slices, cinnamon brioche buns with lemon drizzle and two salad options. But in the end, I opted for one of the fresh sandwiches, which I chose to have toasted. And sweet baby cheeses, am I glad I ordered that sandwich. A beautiful combination of shaved ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and the most incredible pear and fig chutney, this sandwich was the best I've had in months. Order one, for yourself, and don't share it with anyone. You'll thank me later.

It's still early days, but in the three weeks that they've been open, they seem to have made a very positive impact on the people of Wellington. Friendly service teamed with quality local ingredient dishes are always welcome. Go ahead and see for yourself.
