Overview

Set in the heart of the South Island, the Otago Central Rail Trail is a 150-kilometre walking and cycling and horse riding track. The trail runs in an arc between Middlemarch and Clyde, passing through traditional country towns and farming land. Beyond the stunning scenery and incidental exercise, it's a chance to experience a part of New Zealand's history — the rail route which you ride upon was built back in 1893 — as well as get a taste of genuine rural hospitality.

You can create your own bespoke trail experience, take a bike and smash it out in 3–4 days or book in a week and stroll at a leisurely pace. Whatever you decide, you'll have the opportunity to quench your thirst at the local pubs and eat some regional fare along the way. There are a number of companies which operate tours on the trail, from luxury experiences to bike adventures — all manner of explorer is catered for. Happy travels.
