The Elephant Wrestler
A new kind of local for those who prefer suits over stubbies.
Overview
Named after an apparently larger than life local who took on not only the best wrestlers in the world but also some of the larger mammals in the animal kingdom, The Elephant Wrestler is your self-described ‘larger than life local’. It seems a decent description.
The courtyard is big and spacious with regular sit-down tables, picnic tables, bar leaner’s, and places to stand and spin yarn. Out here there is a blurred line between indoor and outdoor. The roof opens up on summer days and warm nights, and closes up and turns its gas heater’s on when the colder weather rears its head. With fairy lights, pink signage, and some greenery, it seems this larger than life local has a bit of a softer side too. Inside is much the same with a range of seating options, big screen TV’s, and a big long bar with Heineken on tap.
Here on a Thursday night, the crowd is mixed, there’s a group of suits who’s quiet beer-after-work seems to have turned into seven whiskies, while a few lots of twenty-something’s catch up over the $16.50 Thursday night steak special. Quite the opposite to most locals, there are a lot of good-looking females here. Maybe it's got something to do with the dude with his guitar playing covers of Six60 and Coldplay.
It’s a gastropub with a large menu, big fresh pizzas, and classy cocktails. It’s a new kind of local, a local for those who prefer Heineken over Lion Red, suits over stubbies, and acoustic jams over pokie machines.
