Overview
Cast your mind back to 1991, when fashion was still fluoro and the beats were "fresh", music was on cassette tape, and Naughty By Nature was on the radio. Fast forward to 2011, two decades since breakthrough single "O.P.P." first graced the airwaves, and the world is a different place – but the New Jersey wordsmiths are still at it: still versing, still recording and still touring.
Throughout the 1990s Naughty By Nature were iconic figures in hip-hop, embodying the playful spirit and suggestive lyricism that would come to define rap as a genre. Though they worked alongside legends like 2pac, Run-D.M.C. and Eazy-E, the group made their own fate, making a successful crossover to mainstream without ever losing their urban roots. Despite a brief breakup in the early 2000s Naughty By Nature is still going strong, set to release their first album since 2002 later this year.
Their 20th anniversary tour brings them to Aotearoa for a show that will delight rap fans young and old. Armed with a new album as well as their catalogue of classics, and with support from PNC and Young Sid, the group will celebrate a history of hip-hop 20 years in the making.
Upbeat and uplifting despite rough beginnings, Naughty By Nature today is a throwback to another time, when hip-hop was about rhythm and wordplay ahead of marketing and aesthetics – and the chance to see them in concert is one not to be missed.
