Overview
'Dos Amigos Cantina' or 'Dos Amigos' as it is more commonly known was opened in April 2010 and has been making food ever since, I assume. I am a fan of dining in Mission Bay. I feel it is a nice place to just rock up, go for a stroll, pick a place to eat then sit down and eat. Later I like to go over to the beach where I take my shoes, sometimes jandals, off and feel the sand flow through my toes. In this instance however, there was to be no stroll and certainly no sand flowing through my toes.
I had a job to do.
The menu describes the food in amazing terms, and while it is clear for all to see that they have a way with words, this in no way implies that they have a way with filling a flour tortilla. I was still remaining sceptical, having been hurt in the past.
I went for a chicken burrito, as that is always my preferred choice. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it's because… no, I really have no idea. The green sauce was explained as being spicier so I went for it but there was no kick from it. I'll let this slide as a technicality because they didn't say it was going to be spicy, just that the green was spicier than the red - which it well may have been. And because the burrito itself was so god damn good. If I had to sum up this burrito in one word, that one word would be, "beautiful".
The inside of the burrito was everything you'd hope it would be; in fact I think it sets an example to other burritos. It isn't all sunshine and lollipops though, to be honest while eating the first 1/3 it struck me that this wasn't going to be enough to satisfy my hunger but I pushed the doubts to the back of my mind. And I'm glad I did. I took my time and by the last mouthful, I was comfortably full. Not sickly, need to roll to the car park full, just comfortably full.
While there may be Mexicans working at this fine, fine establishment, I did not see any. The staff I did encounter though were very friendly and helpful.
It was Thursday lunch and I was by myself. But it was a sunny day and I sat outside on the deck, looking out to the ocean, the smell of salt and underage girls on school holiday wafting through my nostrils. What with a Heineken in my hand waiting for a burrito to be served in front of me, it was very close to what I imagine heaven to be like.
Would I eat there again? Yes.
