Overview

Occupying the spot that was once SkySport Grill on the Viaduct is a new burger joint/beer spot called Fokker Bros. We were heading to a concert in the city later that evening so thought Fokker Bros would be ideal for a couple of drinks and some no fuss food to get the night started. The fit out is pretty friendly, with plenty of green climbing the walls and a couple of TVs to keep an eye on the cricket.

Fokker Bros sits right across from O'Hagan's Irish Bar which was absolutely frothing with end of year celebrations and the like. Fokker Bros was tame in comparison but made a good spot to perch on a bar stool and observe the entertaining antics of those who had downed one too many pints of Guinness.

Fokker Bros' drinks menu was fairly short but had some decent options including Epic and Peroni on tap and the best god damn cider in New Zealand, Hallertau Granny Smith. Naturally, we ordered a couple of pints, which rung up at $10 each; not bad considering a bottle is usually $6 in liquor stores. On a side note, pints of Peroni are only $5 everyday between 2pm and 5pm.

The food menu was also pretty straight to the point with some delicious sounding hot-dogs and a range of burgers. We went with the Funky Chicken Burger ($16), The Shroom Burger ($15), and a side of onion rings ($8). When you are paying upwards of $12 for a burger on its own you expect it to be good and these ones didn't disappoint. The Funky Chicken came with a tasty crunchy buttermilk batter and home made ranch dressing, both these things set it apart from other chicken burgers I have had in recent times. The Shroom Burger had a curiously coloured black bun which can be a struggle to get your head around but if you look past that the portabello mushrooms were spot on with a touch of crisp and the salad was fresh and crunchy. A slight gripe was that the onion rings didn't come with any dipping sauce and we had to pay an extra $2 to get some mayonnaise, a real "what is the world coming to," type moment.

All in all Fokker Bros was a definite pass. A good easy spot for quality food and drinks in a central location.
