Overview

Your centrally-located bastion of the indie aesthetic, Wine Cellar is the place you go when you want high levels of comfort served with your boho chic. Mostly known as a purveyor of intimate and interesting gigs, the little rabbit warren just below K Rd (entrance halfway down the St Kevin's Arcade stairs) could be pretentious if it was a little less scummy; thankfully it treads the line between nonchalantly cool and annoyingly ironic. The bar area is dark and relatively large, serving a nicely cheapish array of bar food, local and international wines, top shelf liquor and obscure beer. There's a student vibe but its array of local art on the walls, motley collection of old furniture and playlist of indie legends will please the older patron too, plus, generally the clientele are laid back and friendly regulars. Bar service is the one let-down here – the slightly haughty staff reacted to a request for Malibu and pineapple juice as if it was the worst joke they'd ever heard. I was deadly serious though. It's a tasty drink.

The performance space is separated from the bar by a dingy corridor – you feel as if you're entering the bowels of the city as you tiptoe through. Once inside the medium-sized, couch infested, rug-draped, concrete floored room you'll most likely enjoy a spoken-word, acoustic or keyboard-driven show, with the artists standing less than ten feet away: intimacy is triumphed here. There's also a secret passageway linking Wine Cellar to Whammy Bar, the small, noisy indie-rock hut next door, and often these two venues get together for a multi-room event which can always be relied upon to toast the cream of local talent.

Wine Cellar is the place you go if you want a quality night out, with great and unobtrusive music, plenty of space to sit down, and perhaps a quirky table-mate. On gig-nights it can get full before 9 (depending on start time), but generally it's spacious until 10.
