Overview
Looking to inject some culture into your weekend? Perhaps you're looking for something more rewarding than a Netflix binge session? Let the Auckland Symphony Orchestra be your saviour this long weekend with the next round of free family concerts.
Made up of 90+ players, the community-based orchestra's main philosophy is that music should be fun and enjoyed by players and audiences alike — hence the regular free concerts. The orchestra most recently tackled the biggest dance tracks of the last 30 years for sell-out genre-mashing rave, Synthony.
Over the next two weekends respectively the orchestra will assemble at the Auckland Town Hall and Bruce Mason Centre to reimagine music from blockbuster films and stage shows.
APO Musical Director and Conductor Peter Thomas will lead the orchestra note-for-note through tracks from Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Spiderman, Psycho, Matilda and Video Games Live. Accomplished saxophone player Christiaan Swanepoel will act as the soloist for both events ripping it up on his baritone.
The best part is that entry is entirely free and everyone is welcome. The doors open at 2pm and the show runs for approximately 80 minutes with no interval.
