Overview

SkyCity Auckland is going all out with its Chinese New Year celebrations this year, bringing back its popular street festival from 24–26 January. The three-day spectacle will celebrate the Year of the Rat and recognise Auckland's rich diversity with a range of live cultural performances.

The free event will see the entire central city street closed off to make way for lion dancers, Chinese acrobatics, taiko drummers, pop-up Chinese market stalls, balloon artists and more. For those looking for traditional Chinese food, the Auckland Night Markets will pop up under the Sky Tower while Chinese restaurant, Huami, will be offering a special set menu throughout the celebrations.

On Chinese New Year Day, Saturday, 25 January, the God of Fortune will perform a SkyJump from the Sky Tower followed by the traditional 'painting of the eye' ceremony to bring good luck and the lighting of firecrackers to ward off evil spirits.
