Overview

One of the things we pride ourselves on is being a clean green nation, right? So what better way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of going nuclear free than with an exhibition of work from one of the nation’s great artists and anti-nuclear protestors.

Blast! features paintings by Pat Hanly and is accompanied by photographs taken by his wife Gil Hanly. Their artwork of the 1970s and 80s documents and brings to life the period of  widespread protest and anger towards the testing of nuclear weapons in the Pacific. The vibrant colour and powerful imagery that characterises Pat Hanly’s work reflects his passion for the peace movement and his desire to speak out. Gil Hanly's photographs illustrate local peace group demonstrations and document how the anti-nuclear movement grew over those years.

Blast! also includes documentaries; No Nukes is Good Nukes and Departure and Return by Claudia Pond-Eyley; Women on the Move by Lisa Prager and the film Pacific 321 ZERO by From Scratch.

Every third Sunday a guest speaker will talk about their personal journey, inspiration and passion behind the peace movement and the protests that helped New Zealand become nuclear free. Speakers include the artists' daughter Tasmin Hanly,  the director of Greenpeace Bunny McDiarmid and Gil Hanly herself.
