Overview

A new direction and an injection of fresh perspective, Urbanlife is an Auckland Museum initiative aimed at fostering community relationships and providing a platform for Auckland's young voices to speak out on life in the urban environment of Tamaki Makaurau.

The project, which kicked off in April, is a collaboration between six groups of 15 to 24 year olds from across the city and local artists, such as musician DLT, Anonymouz and Grace Taylor from the South Auckland Poet's Collective. Through engaging in a variety of art forms, these young delegates have expressed their feelings on key issues such as education, employment, housing, well-being and the environment, in the hope of making our city a better place to live.

Working with their mentors and drawing inspiration from Auckland Museum's picture collections, the groups have created graffiti art, soundscapes, spoken word poetry, photographs and screen-printed t-shirts in response to these pressing issues. Their work is brought together in next months' Urbanlife exhibition, which displays the creative and thought-provoking results of the project and features scheduled performances and short films on the groups and their works.
