Overview

Federal Street has gained a contemporary new eatery and it's not only got a fresh decor but it's also mouth-wateringly good. 1947 is the new Indian joint in town, and with its delicate yet delicious vendor snacks from the bustling streets of Mumbai and dum biriyanis from the Palaces of Nizam, the restaurant certainly delivers a unique culinary experience.

The new eatery is not only a lesson for your tastebuds but also for your mind. Pull up a pew and learn all about the year of India's independence, which is a major influence throughout the restaurant. From the quirky newspaper printed menus to the golden water chalices, the distinctive diner will transport you back to 1947.

As you enter the large modern space, you're welcomed by a tuk tuk, which is the perfect photo opportunity. You're also greeted with a warm smile and impeccable service. To get a feel for the whole experience, I would recommend dining during the weekend, when the restaurant is a lot busier.

Celebrate the birth of India's freedom by ordering a chef's special — lamb shank nihaari — which is cooked to tender perfection for over six hours. Or if that doesn't tickle your tastebuds, why not try a traditional tandoori chicken, smothered in rich spices and served with yogurt, tangy lemon and mint sauce.

As you look at the hand-crafted menu, you'll find yourself spoilt for choice. I opted for a street Samosa Chat to start — a beautiful bundle of colour, made with mashed potato, mint yoghurt, tamarind chutney and a sprinkle of crunchy noodles. Next, the Bang Bang Butter Chicken, with its creamy sweet flavours and buttery aromas, I was left pining for more. For those more partial to a spicy curry and are feeling daring, why not try the Butter Chilli Fish, which has been awarded three chillies and is the hottest plate on the menu.

With an extensive collection of dishes and cocktails 1947 offers you the chance to taste some exotic flavours, delicious plates and most importantly discover India's hidden treasures.
