Overview

The latest burger joint serving up burgers in our fine city, the Auckland Viaduct's Burger Boy promised, "the taste of a good burger". Located on a corner store-style setup on Quay St, this friendly new establishment is classic fast food for those strolling the waterfront area.

But how do they stack up alongside the illustrious alumni we strive so hard to keep abreast of? Via Concrete Playground's Guide to Auckland's Best Burgers.

First off, the selection. The menu isn't overly complex, with enough variety on the menu to please: hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken, fish, pulled pork, lamb shoulder, duck and a few other options. A great start, supported by various greens and potato dishes. The french fries with malt vinegar were a zingy addition - if a tad thin. Quenching the thirst, the Boy can also supply you with a range of alcoholic (or regular) beverages for the no doubt thirsty work that is roaming the streets of the CBD.

But these additions are but a side note - how does the main event stack up? Snagging the staff-recommended Bad BoyBubby (a cheeseburger, named after a rather shocking Australian film that required censoring to play in the UK), fries and a drink, we dug in. You'll notice these are 'long burgers' - akin to the BK Chicken Burger. They are well built and filled, with a satisfactory B2B (beef 2 bun) ratio, crisp, tasty fillings and a soft, warm bun. No complaints there.

They were juicy, saucy and delicious. Did they compare to the 09's finest? Sadly, not especially. They were good but not life changing - a great stop off if you're in the area, but not a destination in itself. The price left a little to be desired, clocking at $24.50 for an L&P, cheeseburger and fries. This no doubt reflects it's clean, modern and cool interior, decked out with comic-style artwork and prime seaside real estate - but when it's $3.50 shy of The Grill by Sean Connolly's Wagyu burger with duck fat chips, or more than double the cost of two Better Burger cheeseburger combos, you wonder if you might have paid over the odds (just sayin').

Despite the finicky price, there's no reason not to enjoy a scrumptious, juicy, well-rounded Burger Boy meal if you're in the area - we certainly would.
