Geeks on Sainsbury

Overview

For years, the Auckland burb of Sandringham has been yearning for a modern coffee spot to plonk itself amongst the rather unflattering choice of stodgy bakery food that was on offer. Say hello to Geeks on Sainsbury.

On a stormy Sunday morning, after the rain had eased off and decided to peskier others further east, my partner in crime and I, took to Geeks on Sainsbury for some well earned deserved breakfast. We decided to perch ourselves on one of their outside beer hall tables to overlook the reserve and allow our pale (almost transparent) skin to soak up the morning sun as it briefly broke through the clouds.

After being greeted by very friendly staff and our coffee order was briskly taken, we stuck our noses into the menu to see what would catch our eye. Firstly, if you’re like me and enjoy a sleep in, the words all day breakfast running down the full length of the A4 menu is like music to my stomach. For breakfast they have a mouth-watering range of choices, from granola ($11), eggs on toast ($10,90) and multiple variations of eggs bene ($18), waffles ($15) and bagels ($14 - $16), to which you can consume each for under a crisp twenty-dollar bill.

Coffee was a bit slow off the mark; much like myself early in the morning, hence sleeping in, so once it arrived we were ready to order. The B.L.T bagel ($15), consisted of a lightly toasted Best Ugly Bagel that gently caressed the bacon hock, tomato, lettuce, melted Gouda and house-made chutney to make for a flavoursome, fresh breakfast. For myself I ordered the banana and granola waffles ($15). The two crispy, yet so incredibly fluffy, little morsels were sprinkled with their house made granola, smooth maple peanut butter and drizzled with caramel. On the side were a pile of sliced banana, a pottle of maple syrup and a hefty scoop of vanilla ice cream. The waffles were inhaled and hit my sweet tooth like a freight train outta Texas, delicious. As for the coffee, they use the boutique bean company from Welly called Red Rabbit, which turns out a decent brew and for only four dollars you can afford to go for a second round.

Geeks on Sainsbury is definitely one to note down for parents of mini humans or furry ones with the adjacent park acting as wonderful (read: free) entertainment. You can enjoy your coffee in peace and with the large bi-folding doors running along the front of the building for which I have no doubt it’ll be a summer hotspot in the warmer months. There was just nothing dorky about it and we’ll be back for more.
