Po' Brothers

Overview

If you think Po' Brothers is just another generic Asian eatery opening up on Ponsonby Road, you couldn't be further from the truth. Small but perfectly formed, Po' Brothers occupies a prime spot on the main drag in Ponsonby with a neon red sign welcoming you through its doors.

Dark, sultry and intimate, this would make the perfect date night spot but at the same time there is one big central table that would be ideal for groups.

From the owners of Bangkok in Kingsland, the menu is a fusion of dishes from Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea. We sampled quite a few dishes including the chicken satay skewers, the pork belly skewers and the Korean fried chicken wings. The wings were covered in a sauce we couldn't get enough of and we would have been more than happy with just a huge bowl of these and the signature crispy chicken skin with sweet chilli dipping sauce.

The Korean chicken wings were definitely our favourite dish and we were fighting over the last one. The sauce was really addictive and they had been deep fried so had a crispy, crunchy coating. In future we would order two portions of these as they were just so moreish. Not to everyone's tastes but certainly to ours, the crispy chicken skin came in huge shards and felt so naughty but good at the same time - the accompanying sweet chilli dipping sauce complemented the skin perfectly.

The pork belly skewers were very popular and the fat had been seared so it was crispy and not fatty at all. The chicken satay skewers had that signature peanut flavoured sauce and the chicken was still moist and soft so had been expertly cooked.

They are getting a lot of attention for their dessert baos filled, deep fried and brimming with ice cream. Flavour combinations include: cookies and cream ice cream with cookie crumble, matcha ice cream with red bean paste and peanuts, and salted chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips and chocolate drizzle —we'll certainly be back for one of those.
