Overview
Seabreeze opened its doors only a few months ago, but it feels like it's been here for years. Perhaps that's in part because the owner, Brodie Mcdonald, grew up down the road and used to wash dishes in the same spot nine years ago. Locals swarm the place for weekend brunch, and even wait on the sidewalk in small groups until a coveted table opens up.
At least half of the light maple wood tables are outside, and tall windows wrap around the entire space— often open to let the breeze fly in on sweltering summer days. Inside, the design is minimal yet charming and effective with a dark smokey blue covering most of the walls, simple wooden retro chairs pushed under tables and brightly coloured cushions adorning the benches. It feels simultaneously nostalgic and modern— Brodie obviously knows his way around a colour palette and a piece of furniture.
The menu is similarly charming, featuring generous and familiar brunch staples, laced with just the right amount of creativity and daring. The bone marrow burger ($19) is one example, but our favourite has to be the Bharta eggs ($18). This perfectly poached egg oozes onto a rich spiced aubergine puree that's enlivened with generous helpings of chilli butter and whipped yoghurt. It's unlike anything we've ever tried and it's probably the best egg dish in Auckland.
The fish of the day ($23) was almost as delectable, featuring perfectly seasoned and seared chunks of yellow fin tuna over a salad of fresh mint, fried cherry tomatoes and button mushrooms. There's also a range of cold pressed juices and smoothies which impress— try the raw cacao with cayenne pepper and chocolate peanut butter. You won't be disappointed. But what really stands out is the Supreme coffee. It's the perfect accompaniment to any one of the beautiful brunch meals on offer.
After spending a few mornings at Seabreeze we can see why the locals are flocking to it. Owner Brodie Mcdonald has captured the essence of the neighbourhood, and brought about a brunch experience that's got to make it one of the city's most exciting newcomers.
