Overview
I'd argue West is best when it comes to most things in Auckland, but it's an uphill battle arguing that it's best when it comes to cafes and eateries. That's an honour held by more central suburbs with a higher proportion of rich folks and hipsters with penchants for $25 smashed avo. The newly reopened Woodworks must have heard the cries of Westies craving a decent breakfast and lunch eatery, as it's serving it up smashed avo and all the classics just as good as any central cafe does.
After opening and closing two years ago this westside gem situated in an old carpentery and furniture store has thankfully opened its doors again in late October. It was bustling and busy the very next day when I visited.
The building's interior is spacious with exposed beams above head, white painted brick walls, hanging greenery and varnished wood. For those needing a substantial, comforting start to the day, the breakfast burger is your best option. It's bacon, egg, onion relish and dreams all encased between two pillowy brioche buns. On the other hand, if you've got an early morning sweet tooth do not miss the housemade waffles. They're slathered in a generous portion of nutella then topped with crushed hazelnuts, vanilla and mascarpone. There's nothing wrong with dessert for breakfast.
For those visiting later in the day, the pulled pork bun should be the go-to for diners later in the day. This beautiful meaty masterpiece is full of flavour, dripping with succulent pork, enlivened by coriander and a surprisingly spicy wasabi mayo.
Proprietors Jess Brewer and Mattieu Gosset and their talented chef have done a beautiful job of creating a relaxed dining experience complete with delicious food, friendly service and near perfect coffee. It's a cafe that West Auckland deserves.
