An often underrated and under-appreciated food and drink precinct, Darlinghurst’s Stanley Street boasts a variety of tasty and affordable eateries and an array of exciting bars. As part of Good Food Month, the street is hosting a night of al fresco dining, drinks and live music on Saturday, January 15.
A Taste of Stanley Street will encourage patrons to sample dishes and drinks from the venues, with each bar and restaurant serving up its own unique $20 meal deal containing a taste of its menu and a cocktail, beer or wine. Some choice selections from the night’s lineup include a taco and margarita from La Farmacia; the return of the London-style boiled bagel with salted beef, tangy mustard and pickles with an IPA from Stanley’s; a pork crackling slider and a pint of Sapporo or Asahi from Dumplings & Beer; and rock oysters and a glass of Doom Juice’s natty rose from Bar Nina.

While Good Food Month offers up some extravagant set menus and big-name collaborations that’ll set you back hundreds of dollars, there are also more affordable options if you want to get into the swing of things this January. CBD restaurant Indu hosts regular vegan nights throughout the year, and on Tuesday, January 25 it’s rolling out the red carpet to welcome Rhys Watson-Lamb (Kid Kyoto) for an exciting menu that combines the Japanese and southern Indian cuisine.
Available for $69 per person, the set menu starts with curry salted edamame, daikon mochi with coconut chutney, watermelon sashimi and wild mushroom dosa. The vegan night’s mains menu is built around a Japanese potato curry which is accompanied by corn ribs, daal, paratha and sushi rice, before the meal is brought to an end with an avocado ice cream and vegan meringue. You can also take things up a notch by adding wine pairings to the meal for an extra $30 a head.

If you love ordering falafel when you’re out but haven’t had the confidence to make it yourself, Above Par’s CBD venue is offering some help with a falafel-making masterclass. Chef Efe Topuzlu will take you under his wing to teach you how to make the Clarence Street spot’s sesame seed-topped falafel from scratch, before you sit down to enjoy a four-course Middle Eastern feast full of favourites from the Above Par menu.
Following the class, you’ll be treated to puffy bread with spiced olives and pickles of entree — and you’ll get the chance to finally dig into some falafel yourself, paired with babaganoush and lahmacun. The mains in your post-masterclass meal will feature chicken shish, lamb kofta and fattoush, before a pistachio baklava is served for dessert. The masterclass and subsequent meal will set you back $79 per person, with sessions from 6pm on January 14, 21 and 28.

Kensington Street fine diner Olio is bringing together the land and the sea for an extravagant night of cooking from head chef Lino Sauro and Melbourne’s Adrian Richardson (La Luna). Richardson, the co-host of the hit show Good Chef Bad Chef, will collaborate with Sauro and the Olio team to present a six-course feast that combines the best of Sicilian and Australian cuisine.
On Thursday, January 20, each chef is taking charge of three courses on the set menu. Richardson will be bringing his focus on using every cut of meat from the animal, which he developed at La Luna, and applying it to crispy pigs ears, crackling-wrapped pork loin and filet mignon served with Café de Paris butter in the degustation. As for Sauro’s offerings, diners will be treated to triple-cooked octopus with lemon crushed potatoes and spicy capsicum aioli; a seafood-heavy tonnarelli made with squid ink spaghetti, then topped with a Australian Bay bug, shellfish and spicy pork ‘nduja sauce; and a decedent chocolate mousse for dessert.
