When a restaurant specialises in fried chicken you know it’s going to make a mean chicken burger. Located in the Valley and West End, Lucky Egg knows how to fry up some damn good chicken. And on the Original burg, when it’s combined with tasty slaw, kewpie mayonnaise and honey mustard, and placed on a fresh bun, it’s one helluva time. Or, you could level up to the Buffalo Crispy with fried chicken, American cheddar, pickles, spinach, buffalo sauce and kewpie mayonnaise. If you’re still peckish, add a side of buffalo fried cauliflower — you won’t regret it.

Since opening in 2014, Red Hook has cemented itself as one of Brisbane’s best New York City-inspired haunts. This CBD laneway bar and diner offers burgers, brisket, buffalo wings, tacos and American-style cocktails. But one of its most popular menu items is the Shaolin Soul burger with crumbed chicken, miso mayo, char siu sauce and lettuce on a black brioche bun. Add some loaded fries and an American-style beer for the full experience. Oh, and on Mondays you can grab one of these bad boys for only $10 — you’re welcome.

A burger joint inspired by Street Fighter? Yep, it’s a thing. And it serves some of the best burgers in Brisbane. Super Combo (named after a move in the video game) is an eatery in Bowen Hills with quirky interiors and a menu packed full of treat yo’self meals. The Sonic Boom burger is a standout, featuring crispy fried chicken, cheddar cheese, smoky mushroom sauce, maple-candied kaiserfleisch bacon, pineapple chutney, cabbage slaw and garlic aioli. And yes, it’s as good as it sounds.

You’ll understand why Miss Kay’s slogan is ‘share your drinks, not your burgers’ when you take a bite from its Ludakrisp chicken burger. With crispy fried chicken, house slaw, pickles, sweet barbecue sauce and mayo, it’s simple but delicious. Or you could always have a crack at the slightly healthier Get Clucked burger with spicy grilled chicken breast and plenty of fresh ingredients, including pineapple. Miss Kay’s has seen phenomenal growth since opening in the city in 2015. There are now five locations across Brisbane — CBD, Mitchelton, Springwood, Birkdale and the Bite Markets — so there’s bound to be one close to you.

Greaser is a not-so-secret, secret dive bar renowned for its hard-to-find location, American-style menus and fit-out, and live music scene. Once you find the entrance (down Robyn Ward Lane), seat yourself at one of the dimly lit booths (ambience guaranteed) and ask for the famous fried buttermilk chicken burger, featuring bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato, and served with chipotle mayonnaise and a side of chips. While you’re there, treat yourself to a beverage from the impressive drinks list, which includes a large selection of American craft beers and artisanal cocktails. Our pick is the Whiskey Apple: eight-year-old Tennessee whiskey and freshly pressed apple juice.
