Strobe Music Film Festival
Mogwai, DEVO, Luther Vandross, J Dilla and Jackie Shane are in the spotlight at Sydney's returning showcase of music films.
Overview
When Sydney Film Festival arrives each year, do you spend all of your time seeing flicks in the Sounds on Screen strand, the event's home for movies about music? If so, then you also need to make a date with Strobe Music Film Festival. Now in its fourth year, the latter takes place out of Golden Age Cinema and Bar — but to get things started in 2024, it's hosting its opening night in a space that's no stranger to echoing tunes.
Kicking off on Friday, August 9, Strobe is heading to the Sydney Opera House first, where Mogwai: If the Stars Had a Sound is launching the fest in the venue's Playhouse. From there, attendees will be back at Surry Hills' beloved boutique cinema to see seven features and a short that all boast impressive soundtracks.
Dates vary until Sunday, September 8, but DEVO — about the iconic band, of course — is one of the early highlights, playing Strobe after its Australian premiere at Vivid earlier in the year. From there, Luther Vandross, J Dilla, Jackie Shane, Brazil's Black Rio movement and The Montreux Jazz Festival are in the spotlight, thanks to fellow docos Luther: Never Too Much, The Legacy of J Dilla, Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story, Black Rio! Black Power! and They All Came Out to Montreux.
Australian musical Starstruck is also on the bill, as paired with short doco Do It Herself: A Honey Trap Sound System Story.
