Overview
A mainstay in South Brisbane's cafe and bar lineup, the Southside Tea Room manages to seem tucked away despite being located on the much traversed Wynnum Road.
Opened by members of Brisbane band The Grates, this Southside-and-proud watering hole is knowingly kitsch when it comes to decor, with strings of fake flowers, embossed wood-effect wallpaper and mismatched chairs. The adjoining bar Death Valley is open Wednesday to Sunday nights and features occasional live music, and Red Robin Supper Truck is on-hand with some of Brissie's best burgers.
The daytime cafe menu consists mostly of sandwiches (Swiss and cheddar grilled cheese with a 'dirty mayo' dipping sauce; Cuban sandwich), cakes of the day and an impressive array of milkshakes (peaches and cream; salted caramel). Though there are not many food choices, locals will appreciate having a convenient spot to pop in for a tea or coffee any day of the week. The cafe also plays host to a variety of weekend activities like mini markets and a clothes swap every third Sunday of the month.
