Overview

Another week, another chance to fill it with as much fun as possible. Thankfully, Brisbane is a place that knows how to deliver. Musical parodies based on top sci-fi TV shows on a Monday, weird and wonderful beers on a Thursday, iconic art on a weekend — that's just life in this busy city of ours. No day is ever the same, and no span of seven days either. Of course, we wouldn't have it any other way.

Too much to do, too little time? If that's how you're feeling, don't worry, we've got you covered. To help you get the most out of every moment across this particular week, we've teamed up with Australian Red Cross and Uber to cast our eyes over the best events happening around town from Monday to Sunday. The result is a jam-packed agenda that not only takes care of your free time but makes sure you're having a mighty fine time while you're at it, too.

If you need a ride to or from your destination, Uber can obviously assist — but the ride-sharing service and Australian Red Cross also have your Sunday sorted. That's when they're holding their annual Uber x Red Cross clothing drive, and will even send a driver to your house to pick up your unwanted threads. As well as helping clear out your wardrobe and helping those in need, it's the perfect way to cap off your busy week. Spend Monday to Saturday at all-you-can-eat taco nights, jazz and beer sessions and twilight markets, then chill at home, donate to a good cause without leaving the house and make a date with your couch.

As a sci-fi TV series about alien abductions, unexplained happenings, UFOs, conspiracies and all manner of odd occurrences, plenty of strange things have happened on The X-Files. The sewer-dwelling man-like monster. The talking tattoo. The Cops episode. Jerry Springer showing up. Mulder dancing at a cowboy bar.

The list goes on, but only Brisbanites can enjoy a singing parody version of the hit show at Brisbane Arts Theatre. That’d be X-Files: The Musical. The Australian premiere production runs until tomorrow, so grab a ticket and see how it’s proving that the truth is out there — in song, and on the stage.

Break out your stretchiest attire, prepare to start quoting Homer Simpson and make a beeline for your new Tuesday night dinner spot. Every week, South Bank’s Mucho Mexicano serves up an all-you-can-eat taco feast — and it’ll only set you back $25 per person.

With both regular and gluten-free tortillas available, its taco menu includes wagyu beef, grilled chicken, crispy pork belly, chorizo and battered snapper — plus pumpkin and haloumi for those that don’t partake in meat. There are only two stipulations: everyone at your table has to take part in the unlimited taco festivities, and you can only gorge yourself silly for two hours. Checking out the margarita and sangria menu while you’re there is also highly recommended.

If your mid-week routine could use a little jazzing up, Jessie’s Girl has the answer with its monthly Wednesday night jazz, soul and beer sessions. Just what’s on offer is right there in the name, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being upfront — if it’s a great soundtrack and some top tipples that you’re after, then you’ll find them here.

The folks from A Love Supreme down in the CBD are in charge of curating each evening’s tunes — all on vinyl, of course — so you really are in for an ace selection. Plus, Wednesday night is parmi night on Petrie Terrace, so there’s your dinner sorted. Wednesday Jazz, Soul and Beer happens on the last Wednesday of each month, from 5pm, so head on over today.

Brisbane does pretty well in the craft brew stakes, but come GABS time, it’s difficult not to get a little envious of our pals down south. For those who haven’t heard of Melbourne and Sydney‘s boozy annual celebration, we’re talking about the Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular. It isn’t coming up north, but Bloodhound Bar is serving the next best thing.

Trust the Brunswick Street bar to treat Brissie residents to a highlights package, aka the GABS 2018 Beer Showcase, from 5pm today. A selection of beverages will be on offer, and they’re really not the kind of brews you’ll get to sip every day — aka Mornington Peninsula Brewery’s Squidroot, which infuses beetroot into a New England IPA; Moon Dog’s Cherry Pie a La Mode, a cherry and vanilla bean ice cream beer; and Wolf of the Willows’ Tom Collins Sour, as inspired by the eponymous cocktail. Plus, there’s more where they came from.

You might think King George Square looks pretty fine during the day, and maybe a tad finer at night, but it’s at twilight that City Hall really shows off its colours. And what better backdrop to shop the evening away with, especially when it’s filled with some of Brisbane’s best designers and makers.

From 4–9pm tonight, Brisbane Twilight Market shows off a sizeable array of stalls, all staffed by some pretty nifty and talented local artists. There’ll be an eclectic selection of handmade clothing, accessories, leather goods, paper goods, homewares and more on show. Live music will provide a soundtrack to the evening, while food stalls and a free craft workshop are also on the agenda.

The weird and wonderful combine in Patricia Piccinini’s new exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art. Extending across a range of mediums from sculpture to photography, the artist presents an augmented vision of reality through an amalgam of science, nature and fiction.

Curious Affection features over 70 immersive artworks, and it’s the first time GOMA has exhibited the work of a contemporary Australian artist on such a large scale. It features a variety of new commissions and old works in Piccinini’s unmistakable hyperreal style, including The Field, an installation of more than 3000 flower sculptures — or are they?

For the third year in a row, Australian Red Cross has partnered with Uber for its annual Uber x Red Cross clothing drive — and you’d best take the drive part literally. The ride-sharing service will actually drive to your house, pick up your unwanted clothes and deliver them to the nearest Red Cross. Even better — it’s not only super easy to take part, but it’s free as well.

If you’re a resident of Brisbane’s CBD and surrounding suburbs, just make sure you’re ready between 12pm and 4pm on Sunday, June 3. Once you’ve bagged up all of your old bits and pieces (items you’d happily give your best friend, but no toys, books, furniture or electrical objects), it’s all incredibly simple. Open the Uber app during that four-hour window, find the Red Cross Clothing Drive card, tap ‘request’ and confirm your pickup location. An Uber driver will then stop outside your house, meaning that you just need to take your preloved goods out to their car. Voila, you’ve cleared out your closet and you’ve helped folks in need, all with the tap of a button.
