Overview
I find it very pleasing to see the Brisbane City Council is embracing the diverse celebrations of different faiths at this time of year! As the Christmas tree stands tall and bright in King George Square, Reddacliff Place will become home to the giant Menorah, in recognition of the Jewish celebration of Chanukah.
Chanukah is known as the festival of lights, and it observed for eight days and eight nights, and commemorates the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt in the 2nd century BC. Suffice to say this is a significant time in the Jewish calendar, and the celebration in Reddacliff place will commemorate this. Traditional Chanukah food such as latkes and donuts will be served and there will be live music, rides, and games for the children. Most exciting though is that the giant Menorah will be lit by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, from great heights in a cherry picker, and this will be followed by a spectacular fireworks display!
