Jumoo (Smoking)
Join a smoking ceremony to cleanse the city and open this year’s Brisbane Festival.
Overview
'Jumoo' means 'smoking' in the Turrbal language. And, to open this year's Brisbane Festival, Yuggera and Turrbal man Shannon Ruska will lead a city-wide smoking ceremony on Friday, September 4 that everyone is invited to watch and participate in. Ruska, who is the managing director of Custodianship of Tribal Experiences, will lead Brisbanites into the three-week festival peacefully, and with respect to his ancestors and First Nations communities in Brisbane today. After a whirlwind year, it's time to reset and start afresh. This celebration is open to all ages and starts at South Bank and Roma Street Parklands.
