Overview

Eight days, ten movies, a 101-year-old cinema and a whole heap of reasons to throw some love towards LGBTQIA+ filmmaking. From Thursday, October 20–Thursday, October 27, that's what's on the agenda at Brunswick Street's New Farm Cinemas, all thanks to the very first New Farm Queer Film Festival.

NQFF kicks off with The Divide, the French drama that won the Cannes Film Festival's Queer Palm in 2021, and follows a lesbian couple having a tumultuous time. The movie will enjoy its Queensland premiere to start the fest — but queer cinema fans will have plenty more to enjoy from there.

Also on the list: hilarious and savvy Australian horror-comedy Sissy, featuring a killer performance by Gold Coast-born actor Aisha Dee (The Bold Type); surrealist erotic musical Will-o'-the-Wisp, another Cannes title; and documentary The Most Beautiful Boy in the World, about Swedish actor Björn Andrésen, who came to fame at the age of 15 in Luchino Visconti's 1971 feature Death in Venice.

Or, there's Aussie film Lonesome, about a man from the country making a connection in Sydney; genderqueer musical Please Baby Please, which follows a 50s couple in Manhattan who witness a violent incident and undergo a sexual awakening; and retro sessions of homegrown classic The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert — complete with Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving in one of their most memorable films — and the always swoonworthy Timothée Chalamet-starring Call Me By Your Name.

And, wrapping up the fest is Bros, the new Billy Eichner (Parks and Recreation)-starring rom-com that's also the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio, and features an entirely LGBTQ principal cast.
