Raise the Bar

For a clear liquid, there's a lot more to vodka than meets the eye.

As one of the oldest and most universally recognised spirits in the world, it’s difficult to know quite where to start when talking about vodka. With a history dating back until at least the early Middle Ages, this clear spirit is usually made by distilling liquid from fermented cereal grains, but can also be the product of ingredients as varied as potatoes, fruit or even maple sap. It’s such a serious business, in fact, that member states of the European Union recently embarked on a (purely diplomatic) vodka war to enshrine regulation around the spirit’s production.

This is an admittedly roundabout way in which to say that vodka, perhaps unlike any other spirit, is both incredibly enduring and incredibly versatile.

But, given its versatility, it can be hard to decide what type of vodka cocktail to drink and when. If you’re looking to branch out from the classic vodka soda (which you mastered years ago), we’ve partnered with Grey Goose to showcase four summer-ready — and easy to make — serves for you to raise the bar when it comes to cocktail hour at home. Feel like letting an expert do the work? We’ve also handpicked some of our favourite places in town to enjoy a vodka cocktail.
